There is zero chance that the United States will ever become a fundamentalist, "Islamo-fascist" society, and there is zero chance al-Qaida will ever establish a "grand caliphate." President Bush's policy has remained consistent in this sense: It continues to be based on the policy of most adolescents. That is, get through the day, get through the next election, say whatever it takes to get your way at that moment.
This incredibly charming and effective force is, in more stable times, checked by other branches of government. Unfortunately, we have begun the 21st century without these checks, and the "get- through-the-day" mentality has resulted in an absurd war, featuring Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo and bizarre Rumfeldian "triumphs."See the full content of this document
