Summary
One of my favorite expressions that I've come to learn since moving to New Haven more than five years ago is "The City." The first time someone told me they were heading to "the city," I had no clue what the heck they were talking about. I remember saying, "We are in the city." I thought they meant Hartford ... and there's no reason to go to Hartford, unless you want to visit your insurance company, of course. You see, from where I'm from, we don't idolize New York. Maybe it's because Boston's not that close to Manhattan. Maybe it's because everything in Beantown is better, especially the sports teams.
But, seriously, I had just never heard anybody refer to New York as "the city." It's a popular phrase though, one I've heard a gazillion times over the years.
