In the cruel blink of an eye, the ascension of Phil Mickelson to golf legend took a diabolical turn off the roof of the Champions Pavilion, collided head on with an Oak tree, buried itself in sand and gnarly rough and eventually settled into golf history as one of the most legendary collapses in a United States Open championship.

With consecutive majors already in his back pocket and a 1-shot lead on the 18th hole at Winged Foot Golf Club, Mickelson morphed into Jean Van de Velde, the notorious Frenchman who so brutally choked at the 1999 British Open. The left side of Lefty's brain apparently went numb on the way to joining Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as the only men to win three straight major championships.
