City Lawyer Gets 7 Years in $2m Theft From Clients; Judge Calls Peck a 'Common Thief'

John H. Peck Jr., once a well-known New Haven attorney carrying on a proud family tradition, was called "a common thief" Thursday in Superior Court as he was sentenced to serve seven years in prison for embezzling about $2 million from his clients. Peck, 52, of 104 Huntington St., stood silently with his hands clasped in front of him, staring at the floor throughout the sentencing hearing, even as one of his elderly victims angrily read a statement describing what he had done to her.

"You not only took my money; you took my life," said Ann White. "That money ($183,000) was set aside for my mother's care."
