A New Haven woman killed last week in a hit-and-run accident on Route 34 had frantically tried to flag down other motorists prior to the incident because she was having difficulty breathing, police confirmed this week.

Born with sickle cell anemia, which can cause troubled breathing, Joanne D. Jackson was walking along Route 34 near Yale Avenue for an unknown reason about 2:05 a.m. May 17, and desperately waved at vehicles, police said.
