Kids were building sand castles on the beach at Lighthouse Point Park Saturday while adults enjoyed picnic lunches in the city's East Rock neighborhood and the tennis courts were all in use at Wilbur Cross High School. It seemed everybody was outside in the January sun -- walking, jogging, bicycling, motorcycling -- and few people were wearing jackets, as the region's old temperature record for Jan. 6 was shattered by at least 10 degrees.

WTNH-TV Channel 8 meteorologist Geoff Fox said the region's temperatures, which are measured in Bridgeport, recorded a high of 63 degrees Saturday, easily surpassing the old record of 53 degrees set in 1949.
