In response to your editorial about East Haven opposing the Tweed New Haven Regional Airport project, I want to make some facts known that haven't been brought up. I serve as the vice chairman on the East Haven Inland Wetlands and Watercourse Commission. Having not seen the proposal, I have no opinion as to how I would have voted. The application was never presented to the commission.
The state of Connecticut established in 1988 the rights of municipal governments to regulate inland wetlands and watercourses. Under the statute, all activity involving inland wetlands and watercourses falls under the jurisdiction of local commissions. Tidal wetlands fall under the control of the state Department of Environmental Protection.See the full content of this document
