Summary


The comment of Cigna's provider relations director that he "could not explain data uncovered by Connecticut's survey" of the major inaccuracies in the child psychiatrist provider lists is an another example of the failed mental health managed care system. A survey of adult psychotherapist provider lists would also reveal many therapists who are no longer participating. How long would a manager last in your company if they were not aware that 30 percent to 40 percent of the employees never showed up for work? But unlike a normal company, the insurance company profits by having obstacles to treatment delivery that discourage patients.

It is often quite difficult for patients, especially men, to pick up the phone to call a therapist. Often a potential patient, in distress, will call a listed provider and wait several hours only to be finally told that the therapist is no longer a provider.
