Illkegal Alien Sentenced to 3 Years On Drug Charges, Then Will Be Deported

Summary

After a last-minute bid to withdraw his plea failed, an illegal Dominican Republic immigrant, who police say delivered heroin all over greater New Haven, was sentenced to serve three years in prison Wednesday, and he will be deported after that. Teodoro Gonzalez, 40, of 147 Lamberton St., New Haven, pleaded under the Alford Doctrine in March to two counts of possession of heroin, but on Wednesday he told a judge that "everyone involved in my case, they know I haven't sold any drugs." Under an Alford plea, the defendant doesn't admit guilt, but admits the state has enough evidence to obtain a conviction at trial. It results in a guilty finding by the court.

Gonzalez, who told Superior Court Judge Brian T. Fischer he has been in the United States for the past 11 years and paid $1,100 fine to stay here legally, was arrested last year after a two-month-long Drug Enforcement Agency investigation.
