In a new twist on identity theft scams, thieves are testing the validity of stolen credit cards by using them to make small charitable donations, the Better Business Bureau warned Wednesday.

In the past, many identity thieves would verify whether stolen credit cards were activated by using them to shop online. But as more retail Web sites have increased security to block bogus purchases, thieves are testing cards by making small charitable donations.
