Holmes' Smiles Tell the Story of Glory at Special Olympics

NEW HAVEN -- Shelton swimmer Michaela Holmes said there are two reasons why she enjoys participating in the Special Olympics: "Because it's fun and you get medals," Holmes said. The Shelton swim team, which consists of 23 members, did a little bit of both over the weekend when the Special Olympics were held at Southern Connecticut State University.

Sunday morning, Holmes, 13, combined with Nick Guido, Jonathon Hill and Rebecca Gally to earn a bronze medal in the 4x25-meter freestyle unified relay. Then, as she sat in the staging area, proudly wearing her bright orange Shelton T-shirt awaiting her final event of the day, the smile on her face told the rest of the story.
