From staff and wire reports The Philadelphia Phillies kept close tabs on Anthony Hewitt, a shortstop at the Salisbury School, for most of the spring. On Thursday, the Phillies selected the power- hitting 19-year old in the first round (24th overall) of the Major League Baseball amateur draft.
Hewitt becomes the first player with Connecticut ties taken in the first round since Norwalk's Pete Tucci went 31st overall out of Providence College in 1996. Also drafted on Thursday was Yale junior catcher Ryan Lavarnway, who went to the Red Sox with the final pick of the sixth round.
