NEW HAVEN -- A Superior Court judge Monday denied a motion by attorneys for Steven J. Hayes, charged in the Cheshire triple homicide, to allow their client to be excused from jury selection proceedings, sources said. Hayes, who did not want to be in the courtroom, will have to attend jury selection under the ruling by Judge Jon C. Blue. No new juror was selected Monday, and to date, 11 jurors have been selected for the trial, which is scheduled to begin Sept. 13.
New Haven Chief Public Defender Thomas Ullmann and co-counsel Patrick Culligan had filed the motion seeking to have Hayes excused from jury selection in part because he no longer confers with his attorneys in choosing jurors and is not paying attention.See the full content of this document
