The gyms were so tightly packed, the players were nose to angry nose with screaming fans on the baseline. Police routinely escorted the visiting team to the city limits, and the two rival cities swelled with either pride or humiliation over the result of a boys' high school basketball game.
In those days when New Haven liked to think it was the Mecca of high school basketball in Connecticut, and Hartford tried to fight that swagger with swagger, few sporting events in the state would have eclipsed a Hillhouse-Weaver basketball game.
