Hamden Man Was Well-Read, Lots of Fun

Summary


HAMDEN -- Veteran educator Salvatore Polio was very handy. "We used to refurbish sailboats, and I spent a lot of time with him in different boatyards," said his son, Dr. John Polio of Simsbury. "He was an OK sailor, but he loved the boat-repairing best. The first boat we had was a 19-footer that we repaired in our backyard, then brought to Morris Cove and launched at Fort Hale Park. One of my uncles went with us, and the three of us didn't get home until late that night after all the problems we had getting the boat rigged and going around Morris Cove. But we sure had a lot of fun."

Polio's handiness went all the way back to childhood, often out of necessity. "We were young kids during the Depression, going to school with big holes in our shoes," said longtime friend Marty Meshako of North Haven. "Sal was a very smart young man, and I remember him making a homemade scooter out of a 2-by-4 and a box with handles. So I copied him, and we'd go up and down St. John Street, and have a lot of fun."
