Gun Crimes Soaring; Authorities Seek Source

Summary


State and local officials admitted last week that they don't know where all the guns are coming from that are being used in what some called an "epidemic" of violent crime in cities around the state. The state does have a special task force, created in 2000, to specifically track and combat the problem of illegal trafficking in guns. In its first two years of operation, the Statewide Firearms Trafficking Task Force received nearly $625,000 in state funding; however, it has received zero state funding sinc, and appears to be surviving on a $50,000 annual federal grant.

In its first year, the task force seized 379 illegal weapons; last year the number was 24.
