Summary
The man who donated period lampposts for the Green was honored Thursday at Town Hall, with those present hoping that the former controversy over the lights is just a dimming memory. William Raveis, who has owned a real estate business in town for more than 25 years, was honored by more than three dozen people who turned out for the unveiling of a plaque in his honor in the vestibule of Town Hall. The metal plaque praised him as a community leader and benefactor, and acknowledged his gift of the 15 lampposts that light the Green. The posts came under scrutiny in December when small plaques containing historical facts and Raveis' name were affixed to them. Many sought and won their removal, believing they would commercialize the Green.
But any wound appeared to have healed Thursday. First Selectman Carl Balestracci unveiled the plaque and presented Raveis with a proclamation. "He is a longtime business and community leader," he said. "We're here to thank him for his very generous gift to the town. It's a happy occasion today."See the full content of this document
