TORONTO -- Wayne Gretzky was at his best passing the puck, but when it comes to the National Hockey League's lockout, the Great One prefers to pass the buck. Even though No. 99 is a managing partner and alternate governor of the Phoenix Coyotes, Gretzky said this week that the row between the league and the NHL Players' Association over a new collective agreement should be solved by Commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA Executive Director Bob Goodenow.

"The reality is, I understand what the players are saying because I was a player, and I understand what management and ownership is saying because I am an owner of a team," said Gretzky, who guided Canada to championship victories at the 2002 Olympics and 2004 World Cup of Hockey. "But this is a complex, complicated situation. There are a lot of issues at stake here, and not just the quote, unquote salary cap.
