$25,000 Grant to Augment Firefighter Monitoring System

Summary

ANSONIA -- The Fire De-partment will use a $25,000 grant to supplement a computer-ized system that monitors move-ment of firefighters inside a burning building. The city currently has 75 de- vices, called passes, that firefight-ers wear on their turnout coats to connect them to a computer console that is monitored during calls. If a firefighter is motionless for more than 30 seconds an alarm activates and a search team can be alerted. If a firefighter is merely pauses to catch his or her breath, he or she can deactivate the alarm, sending a message to the ground team that there is no problem.

The pass also emits a bright light and a loud alarm so the firefighter can be easily located inside a dark or smoke-filled building.
