Forum Pushes for More Education Funding

School officials, city leaders and parents urged state lawmakers Tuesday to put more money into education, saying municipalities are struggling to keep up. About 30 people turned out for a public forum held by the General Assembly's Education Committee at Ansonia High School. The committee has been visiting municipalities, seeking input on the state's system of financing public education.

Topics such as the Education Cost Sharing grant, special education reimbursement and other methods for distributing state funds into local schools were discussed during the 90-minute forum. The resounding theme by nearly each speaker who came to the microphone was that the state is shortchanging school districts, and placing an ever-increasing financial burden on taxpayers.
