Summary


CHRISTOPHER Columbus was known for his navigational skills, but to pursue his dream of circumnavigating the Earth to find India, he had to sell the idea to anyone willing to give him three ships. He began with solicitations of the grandees of his native city, Genoa. From there, he traversed the entire Italian peninsula. He encountered only refusal and humiliation.

On the rare occasion he was allowed to introduce his plan, he dove into the presentation by drawing a rough map of the world on a sphere. The spherical shape of the planet had been accepted by the scientific community, but the undecided needed more proof. So, when Columbus turned the ball around to show the route he would follow, his spectators became dizzy at the thought that half of the world was upside down.
