-MADISON -- Plans to hold a parents-only cocktail party to kick off the high school football season before the game starts Friday were sacked this week amid worries the party would violate town alcohol laws. Several members of the town's youth substance-abuse council, including Lt. Michael O'Connor of the Madison Police Department, have said the party is reminiscent of problems several years back with parents tailgating and drinking alcohol in the parking lot before the game - a practice he called "unacceptable."

Board of Education member Debra Frey, who organized Friday's soiree and was criticized by some for planning a drinking party before a school-sponsored event in the first place, said her intentions were innocent and she changed the day and venue of the party as soon as it occurred to her that it might pose a problem.
