Valley Sports Figure, History Buff Was a Deeply Religious Person

Summary

ANSONIA -- Well-known Valley sports figure Peter Goumas dropped out of high school to serve during World War II, but he always placed a high value on education. And he was nobody's fool. "Some of us thought we were smarter than him," said a son, Mark Goumas of Oxford. "In those days, we all liked to watch 'Jeopardy.' He began watching it at 6:30 each night with my grandmother, who lived next door. And then he'd come back and watch the rerun of the show with my brothers at 7 on another channel. He would have all the answers to things no one thought he knew. This went on for a week before he slipped up and got caught. Everyone laughed about it, and we told that story for years."

Thanks to Goumas, who obtained his GED at age 65, all four of his children went on to college. "With my parents, you knew you were going to college," said Mark Goumas.
