Summary


Florence Nightingale probably saw countless gunshot wounds, shattered limbs, saber slashes and every other unnatural cause of death while caring for British troops during the Crimean War. She helped transform nursing from an almost questionable calling to a selfless profession and could be considered the first "forensic nurse."

Nightingale quickly realized that the appalling conditions in military hospitals was hastening death by cholera, dysentery and other infectious diseases. She saw to it that hospital rooms were cleaned and enforced new standards of hygiene. Infection casualties declined by 40 percent.
