Help Our Feathered Friends with Bottle Gourd Birdhouses

Summary


Gardeners are always helping our feathered friends, often without thinking about it. Our trees and shrubs, even brush piles, provide shelter. Our native plants host the insects that feed them. We include flowers that attract hummingbirds in our spring and summer borders. In fall and winter, berries and seeds support the birds that spend the colder months in Connecticut.

University of Connecticut master gardener Renny Loisel of West Haven has gone a step further with her efforts to help birds. She is growing the large bottle gourds, Lagenaria siceraria, which will be made into birdhouses.
