Summary
Last month my congregation hosted a talk by retired CIA analyst Ray McGovern, who has been speaking out tirelessly all over the country against the most shocking development in the U.S. war against terror, which is the use of torture. In the middle of Mr. McGovern's thoughtful talk to an audience of about 75 at the Unitarian Society, a man I did not know rose out of his seat. Shaking with rage, he shouted that he was a patriotic American, a veteran of the Korean War, and that he would not stand to have his nation vilified by such lies.
He stalked out of the room, leaving us a little breathless with the power of his pain and anger. So we held a few moments of silence before Mr. McGovern -- also a veteran and a patriot -- continued with his reflections on where we are as a nation, and how he feels called to respond.See the full content of this document
