Enemy? Isn't State Worker

Summary


I find most editorials in this newspaper make good sense, but I was disappointed by "Governor buys peace with unions." It seems to pit state workers against state residents in a zero-sum game. You may not like the deal -- and I know I am lucky to be working even part time with furlough days and a pay freeze -- but it is not as if state workers are an alien life form at war with the good people of Connecticut. We are your friends and neighbors; we are the people of Connecticut.

Interestingly, the day that editorial appeared there was a death notice for Jack Smith, 88, of Hamden, a decorated Army veteran with 21 years of service that included 11 months in German POW camps. He went on to a 21-year career as a corrections officer, during which he took a total of three sick days.
