Summary
WEST HAVEN -- Edward J. Lawler Sr. loved taking his family camping. "Years ago, we went camping in New York state," said his wife of 36 years, Janie. "We pitched our tent and Ed put a rock on our cooler before we went to bed. During the night, we heard noises. Ed looked out and saw what appeared to be several small animals, possibly raccoons, and a small bear, which had pushed the rock off the cooler and gotten at our food. They were having a ball eating the food, Ed tried to shoo them away, but was afraid of getting out of the tent. Eventually, the raccoons scattered -- and the bear put the rock back on the cooler! He then left, as if we weren't going to notice anything. We were scared, but laughing at the same time. And as soon as the bear was gone, we locked ourselves in our car for the rest of the night; we didn't know what else to do."
Lawler died July 23 at age 70.See the full content of this document
