Letter to the Editor: Economic Sanctions On Sudan a Laudable Step

Summary

The Jewish Community Relations Council, the community relations and public affairs arm of the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven, has long been active in the movement to stop the genocide in Darfur. We applaud President Bush's recent decision to implement further economic sanctions against Sudan. We urge Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to increase their diplomatic efforts to take full advantage of any room for progress that these sanctions may create.

In addition, we urge the president to exercise the strongest possible leadership with U.S. allies to ensure passage of a U.N. Security Council resolution that supports international economic sanctions that match those implemented by the United States, creates a no-fly zone over Darfur, supports sanctions against individuals having complicity in the genocide and expands the Darfur arms embargo to include the Khartoum regime.
