Letter to the Editor: Promoting Cigars Is Objectionable

Summary

I strenuously object to an image in Saturday's edition showing an individual who "enjoys a cigar." This image is a de facto advertisement for cigar smoking and the Owl Shop. While I strongly believe in our civil liberties, I also believe this image does a disservice to readers, especially children and young adults. Perhaps, the caption should have mentioned, in addition to the smoker's immediate gratification, the health consequences of his activity, including nicotine addiction, obesity, high blood pressure, impaired cardiovascular function and lung cancer.

The incidence of diseases related to smoking tobacco is a leading reason health care costs are so out of control. It does no good to spin this image as a benign activity.
