Letter to the Editor: Mayor 'Intends On Fighting' Over Rail Garage

Summary


A second garage is badly needed and overdue at Union Station. Many articles over the years have illustrated how important additional parking is to promote mass transit. Parking is a major hardship and is becoming worse with parking eliminated due to the removal of the Coliseum. For years, the state Department of Transportation has wanted to construct a garage. A study performed last year revealed that the present garage at Union Station, operated by the city, is the only financially and otherwise underperforming garage between New Haven and New York City.

Repeated calls over the last few years to New Haven Mayor John DeStefano Jr. to ask him to cooperate with the DOT's building of a new garage are always met with the same response. The mayor's office first snickers at any prospect that he would have any idea of what is happening with the garage, then I am directed to an endless stream of bureaucrats. Never over the course of more than a dozen calls over a year was I directed to the same person.
