I've been reading with mixed feelings about the controversy in which some Catholic hospitals are unwilling to provide contraception to rape survivors. The hospitals' reluctance is based upon their religious principles and beliefs. On the one hand, I feel without reservation that the rape survivor is entitled to that contraception. On the other hand, I can understand and fully respect the right of a person or institution not wanting to disobey their religious mandate. It doesn't matter that I do not share that religious view.
Perhaps one way of reconciling this dilemma would be for the hospital to enter into an arrangement with a third party to provide and administer the contraception without the necessity of moving the traumatized rape survivor to another location. This could be a private doctor on call, an organization such as Planned Parenthood, or perhaps a staff member in a nearby hospital.See the full content of this document
