Disparate Styles Find an Easy Dialogue at Kehler Liddell

Summary


On the surface, Jessica Cuni and Gerald Saladyga's aesthetic couldn't be more different. Saladyga's works burst with bright color and tightly defined angles. Cuni's are subdued and amorphous. Yet, when considering the exhibit that pairs the two at Kehler Liddell Gallery, one can clearly find common ground that links them. Both conjure up many permutations of a single idea. Both convey information through abstraction that accommodates geometric and organic elements. Both explore spatial relationships to suggest a sense of space and time. Both reiterate themes of transformation and impermanence, and both suggest a dialogue between order and randomness.

Most of all, both create bodies of work that are well-rendered and invite reflection -- an observation, by the way, that tends to be the case in recent exhibits at this venue, which, after a couple of years on the New Haven art scene, seems to have found a comfortable footing, due, in part, to what appears to be a recent decision to host shows that include works by artists who are not part of its regular stable.
