Derby's Main Street Rehab Project Finally Moving Forward with Demolition

Summary


Crews are clearing debris and sloping the land where two eyesore buildings on Main Street stood for several years until recently, when new Mayor Tony Staffieri had them demolished in preparation for moving the stalled downtown redevelopment project forward. The demolition of the old Hubbell building and part of the Howard Barber building near the bridge that connects Derby and Shelton has also cleared the way for removal of Jersey barriers that narrowed the road from two lanes to one, causing traffic congestion. The barriers were there to protect motorists from any potential falling debris from the old buildings.

Staffieri, in office less than a month, has also in the last two weeks facilitated three meetings on the project to get all the parties communicating: the developer, Derby Ceruzzi LLC; the redevelopment agency; the Board of Aldermen; and appropriate city staff. Derby Ceruzzi LLC was formed specifically for the project and is a partnership between Ceruzzi and Stone Ridge development companies, both of Fairfield.
