Summary
School administrators are spending $54,000 on a new, technology- based curriculum at Derby Middle School that they say will improve writing skills by appealing to students' interest in computers. Assistant Superintendent of Schools Margaret M. Boice said federal grant money is allowing the school district to buy 27 laptop computers and a printer. Middle school students will use an Internet- based program called MY Access by Vantage Learning. Boice said that the computer software has editing features and offers recommendations for improving writing.
Boice said that since students are already attracted to technology, it seemed to make sense to get them engaged in writing on computers. Twenty-four laptops will be reserved for student use, while three will be distributed to teachers working with the program. The grant also will pay for the training teachers will need to help students use the writing program.See the full content of this document
