Gop's Delay Decries Subway Promo in Germany

Summary

MILFORD -- A humorous promotional campaign dreamed up by Subway International franchisees in Germany has brought the wrath of House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, down on the restaurant chain. The 100 Subway franchises in Germany are using food tray liners featuring a bloated Statue of Liberty holding aloft a bag of french fries rather than a torch, with the headline, "Why are Americans so fat?" DeLay claims the term used for Americans, "Amis," is derogatory.

"This is every bad stereotype about corporate America come true," DeLay said in a press release. "I guess for some companies corporate patriotism is as flexible as Jared's waistline," referring to well- known Subway spokesman Jared Fogle, who lost weight eating only Subway fare.
