Summary


At Fairfield University, where others have swung and missed for a generation, Ed Cooley is building a bridge with sincerity. Five years ago, he, too, was advised that Fairfield was a graveyard of young coaching careers and respectively turned a deaf ear. He took the job and went right to work by turning on the charm.

"You have to recruit people that like you," said Cooley. "You have to like them, but at the end of the day, they have to like you. They have to want to play for you. You have to recruit character over talent at times. That's not to say you won't take a talented kid you can help, but in the end, character prevails every night."
