Complaint Alleges Tampering in Registrar's Office

STRATFORD -- A former Republican clerk in the registrar of voters office filed a complaint Tuesday with the state Elections Enforcement Commission, alleging that Democratic Registrar Richard Miron or another clerk there may have tampered with or "fraudulently" changed a council candidate's party affiliation months after the date it was officially recorded. Susan Youngquist, a school board member who worked as a clerk in the registrar's office for 41/2 years, said Tuesday she believes Democrats made the change because they had officially endorsed a candidate who was still a Republican when he was nominated at the Democratic convention July 21, 2003.

Jeff Garfield, executive director of the Elections Enforcement Commission, said he would review the complaint over the next few days to determine if it warrants an official investigation, or if his office has the jurisdiction to handle the complaint.
