State colleges provide affordable safety net One of the great accomplishments of this country is its system of widespread, accessible and affordable public colleges and universities. In the current economic climate, the affordable part is assuming ever- greater importance.
High school seniors, intimidated by the high tuitions at private institutions, are turning to their state schools. And students who did get into their dream private school are transferring to the state systems. Sometimes, it's because they're close to exhausting their college nest egg.
