HARTFORD -- College basketball is a little black and blue this morning, but also enriched by the rock'em, sock'em treat that nearly tore the roof off the XL Center Monday night. The two best and most physical teams in the Big East starred in an action thriller that fell somewhere between Rocky I and Terminator 4 before Pittsburgh, ranked No. 4 in the country, eventually took control over top- ranked UConn in the final three minutes to win the first of at least two, but preferably four, 40-minute combat sessions before the season is through.
DeJuan Blair was the biggest and baddest, and he played for Pitt. In a game he called the most physical of his life, Blair posted man- sized numbers that included 22 points, 23 rebounds and 10-of-17 shooting. The 6-foot-7 Blair, as wide as the Shenandoah Valley, used his girth and skill and quickly got Hasheem Thabeet in foul trouble.
