Most had been skating on fumes since the clock struck midnight over an hour earlier, around the same time Saturday night's playoff matchup between Yale and Union officially became the longest men's hockey game in NCAA history. But when Yale freshman David Meckler tipped in a short-handed goal at 1 minute, 35 seconds of the fifth overtime, sending the Bulldogs to a 3-2 victory and a two-game sweep of Union in the first round of the ECAC playoffs at the Achilles Center, the Yale bench charged the ice to celebrate as if it had just collectively received a Vitamin B12 shot.
In a game that is sure to go down in Yale history as the Marathon on Ice, the Bulldogs and Dutchmen played for 141:35, shattering the mark for longest men's game of 129:30 in 1997, when Colorado College and Wisconsin went to four overtimes in a WCHA playoff game.See the full content of this document
