Chief of Police Robert W. Gill - the first black police chief in any suburb of New Haven when he got the job in 1998 - plans to retire at the end of July after 45 years on the police force. "It's been a great run," Gill said Tuesday. "I don't regret one event of it ... but it's time to do something else."

Board of Police Commissioners Chairwoman Joanne McGuigan said Tuesday that Deputy Chief John C. DeCarlo "certainly is the leading candidate" for the chief's job.
