The Stratford Brakettes begin the pursuit of their unprecedented 29th Amateur Softball Association Women's Major Fast Pitch Tournament championship today when the three-time defending champions play the host Amherst (N.Y.) Lightening Brooks today at 5 p.m. in pool play. The Brakettes (52-1) will face the TC Tremors of Endicott, N.Y. in Friday's final pool play game before the double- elimination championship bracket begins on Friday.
Leslie Malerich (13-0) and Brandice Balschmiter (17-1) lead the Brakettes pitching staff. The top hitter is Arizona State star Kaitlin Cochran, who set a team record with hits in 13 consecutive at bats.
