The Board of Police Commissioners erred when it bypassed the town's bidding procedure by allowing Police Chief Michael Metzler to purchase a car from his wife to use as his work vehicle, Town Attorney George Temple said this week. Temple, in issuing his legal opinion during Tuesday's Board of Selectmen meeting, said the commission should have gone out to bid for the car because the price was $8,000; the town charter requires a bid process for all purchases exceeding $5,000.
