NEW HAVEN -- Friends and family were in disbelief Tuesday that former city Alderwoman Robin Kroogman, a tireless advocate for people, the Fair Haven neighborhood and animals, had died after a battle with cancer. Kroogman, 55, a Democrat, served 16 years on the city's Board of Aldermen from 1988-2003, and mentored newly elected legislators this year.

"She's been in my life since the day she was born. It's not real to me that she won't be here," said her cousin, Jane Altschuler, who is three weeks older than Kroogman.
