Alderwoman Quits Under Pressure in Theft of Funds

Beaver Hills Alderwoman Barbara "Babz" Rawls-Ivy, D-28, resigned Thursday, saying she was "profoundly sorry" for stealing $49,059 from housing authority social service programs for the poor. Rawls- Ivy, 43, signed a plea agreement in federal court in Bridgeport Monday, admitting that from 2000 to 2003 she stole the federal grant money for personal use.

Rawls-Ivy, a former city police commissioner, wrote 39 checks payable to cash and ranging from $60 to $6,000 while she served as executive director of Alliance for Strong Communities, a non-profit entity established by the Housing Authority of New Haven to administer support services for low-income tenants. ASC has since been dissolved.
