Albany On Next Season's Schedule

Summary

Tonight's game between the University of Connecticut men's basketball team and Albany in the first round of the NCAA tournament will be the second meeting between the two schools. On Feb. 24, 1921, UConn defeated New York Teachers College- as Albany was known then- by a score of 29-20. It will not take another 85 years for UConn and Albany to renew their series. The Great Danes will visit UConn next season. With four seniors exhausting their eligibility and as many three underclassmen considering entering this summer's NBA draft- "Our leading guy coming back might be a six-point scorer,"UConn coach Jim Calhoun said- Calhoun wanted to schedule some solid non-conference opponents who are still beatable.

"Teams that had RPIs between 120 and 180 were like gold,"Calhoun said, "but the 300s hurt you. So we decided to go look at teams that are on the rise, teams that might be in the 120 range next year. Albany would be competitive to us, plus we could get an advantage in the RPI. We've changed our scheduling because of a young team next year, but we also don't want to schedule our way out of an NCAA tournament berth."
