STRATFORD -- - Town fire officials are struggling to obtain $60,000 in federal grants that could pay for installation of ventilation systems in three old fire stations. The ventilation systems, which are being used in all new fire stations and added to many older ones, protect firefighters from potentially dangerous fumes that fill the buildings whenever fire trucks are started up.

U.S. Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., met with town and fire officials this week over his continuing crusade to help Stratford and other communities obtain funds for important projects by extending his 4-year-old national Firefighters Act. The act was recently approved in the U.S. Senate as part of the Fire Reauthorization bill. The bill must also be approved by the U.S. House of Representatives before it can be signed into law by President Bush.
