Nobel Committee Takes On Role of Wizard of Oz?
With the Nobel Peace Prize, we get further evidence of how well- known institutions have been taken over by ideologues. It is simply undeniable that we are now living in a liberal land of Oz: Pay no attention to the frauds behind the awards. Perhaps the Nobel committee can come up with a heart, a diploma and a medal for the president, too, so that we can be assured of his empathy, intelligence and courage to lead our nation.
Health Care Reform Bills Fleece Young?
AS I was talking recently with the founder of a large American corporation, the conversation turned, inevitably, to health care reform. His employees in their 20s, on average, cost the company about $1,500 a year in health bills. Those in their 50s cost at least 10 times more. The effect of proposed health care reform, which limits the ability of insurers to charge higher premiums for older adults, would be, he said, a large shift of America's health care burden to the young. This is not an u...
State Making Hunting, Fishing Too Expensive
The state has doubled all fees for hunters and fishermen. I can understand raising them a dollar or two, but double is ridiculous. Every item we buy for our sports has a 6 percent sales tax on it. And we purchase quite a lot of stuff. Just take a look at Cabelas and Dicks sporting goods. Where does all that tax revenue go?
I am a senior at West Haven High School and I am greatly disappointed in the way the Register portrayed the Oct. 26 bomb threat. While the response was not necessarily the most effective, school administration and police believed it was the best course. Students were efficiently escorted out of the building immediately. Though a few rowdy boys decided to misbehave, running across the football field and climbing a fence as a practical joke, the majority of the crowd was well-behaved and read, ...
The Godzilla Who Only Scares Opposing Teams?
By Tom Plate A lot of Hollywood pros believe almost religiously that "Bull Durham," released in 1988, offers one of the best opening lines in American movies. First you see a parade of images of past baseball greats and not so greats, as if a promenade of saints. Then you hear the sweet voice of Annie Savoy (played by Susan Sarandon) saying, "I believe in the church of baseball." Nice, eh? Permit me to extend this ecclesiastical metaphor further.

Feeling Life Dealt a Bum Hand? Take Look at True Young Hero
I read with admiration about John Tartaglio Jr. and his accomplishments without legs or left bicep. Through no fault of his own he had a bacterial infection that took something so precious to someone so young, both legs. He is a true hero, to admire and learn from. Another hero, Derek Jeter, took the time to inspire him when he came to meet Tartaglio at his school. So many so-called heroes are not. Football, baseball and movie stars have been given an opportunity, because of publicity they re...
