Pastor's Remark Costs Obama a Vote
It was reported that Barack Obama's pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, has referred to people of my heritage as garlic-nose Italians. This stereotype deeply offends me. I can't vote for a candidate who sat and listened to years of Wright's sermons. Regardless of the good deeds the pastor has done, clips of his sermons appear to show him as antigovernment, anti-American, antiwhite and now anti-Italian. In over 50 years of faithfully attending Catholic Mass I never heard hate speech as spoken by...
Exxonmobil Should Do 'What Chavez Is Doing'?
Hugo Chavez, president of Venezuela, is a menace to America's national security. He is able to use his oil reserves to turn other countries against America in exchange for petroleum products and has found a way to infiltrate America. Chavez is winning favor with low- income Americans by selling heating oil at a reduced price, courtesy of Citgo. There is a solution. ExxonMobil has a historic opportunity to establish itself as a truly great American company: Do for America's lower classes what ...
Eager for Dems to Leave 'Dinosaur' Behind
Is there no end to the hubris of Joe Lieberman? The man believes the world revolves around him. Why else would he name his party "Connecticut for Lieberman" rather than "Lieberman for Connecticut"? He weeps that the Democrats no longer follow the Clinton/Gore political line. Who is responsible for ending that approach? Lieberman's self-righteous indignation at President Clinton's personal failings led to the political circus of an impeachment trial that crippled his second term. Yet, Lieberma...
President Bush Will Send Congress This Week a Trade [Derived Headline]
PRESIDENT Bush will send Congress this week a trade agreement forcing Democrats there to make an unpleasant choice. Will they follow the bidding of organized labor and reject a pact negotiated more than a year and a half ago with the country's strongest ally and best customer in South America? House Speaker Nancy Pelosi does not want to make her members cast votes on the Colombian Free Trade Agreement. It is unconditionally opposed by the AFL-CIO, which is uninterested in negotiating changes....
You May Have Missed the Front-Page Article in the [Derived Headline]
YOU may have missed the front-page article in The New York Times with the one column headline written in clipped newspaperese: "High Rice Cost Creating Fears of Asia Unrest." But this little story could be an early warning of another big economic problem that's sneaking up on us. The new danger is global inflation -- most worryingly in food prices, but also in prices for commodities, raw materials and products that require petroleum energy, which includes almost everything. Prices for these g...
Teach School Students About Psychiatric Illness?
The story of the Norwalk police officer who apparently committed suicide is so sad. Yet another wonderful, talented person dies because he didn't reach out for mental health assistance. He probably felt trapped and hopeless. I have trouble with the idea that none of his fellow officers noticed any signs of depression. So many people fail to recognize the signs and then afterward say, "How could this have happened?" It's usually not hidden very well if one knows what to look for. Despite what ...
Attacks Have Nothing to Do with Rev. Wright?
We are witnessing a deliberate, political, orchestrated attack, supposedly on the sermons of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Sen. Barack Obama's former pastor. The truth is that this is not an attack on a minister. It is in the tradition of racist campaign practices of the recent past: the "welfare queen" and "Willie Horton" campaigns that use racism as a political tool.
